Tomorrow I leave for my dreaded trip to Texas. There is much to do before I go, so why not give you a tale of horror and suspense for your Sunday driving pleasure? Get ready for the spookity spooky. The Creepy McCreeperton...
Last week was truly an emotional time for me. This week is slightly less intense but still emotional. I expect my trip to Texas to not disappoint in this regard. Needless to say, there has been an air of tension and woe in my home that we are not accustomed to. I suspect this tension may have ignited a paranormal experience in my very own abode.
(Turn off the lights, hug a pillow, and imagine Auntie Sarah with a flashlight under her chin...)
Last Thursday night, Phil and I had a very intense discussion. You might call it an argument. Perhaps you'd even go so far as to label it with words such as "shouting match," "bitch fest," or perhaps "boxing of ears." Well, maybe we didn't physically tussle, but we are quite good at stabbing each other with words. Whatever the case, it was a doozy. We went to bed on good terms, as we never just walk away with hurt feelings or hurt paws. Things seemed right in the world.
I had a difficult time sleeping, as usual. The bedroom was very cold. I kept thinking, "Why won't the heat come on?" The red letters of the clock read 2:30am, then 2:45am, then 3:00am... and I finally drifted off into a deep slumber. What happened next I can only relay to you as I remember, as facts are convoluted and not entirely trusted.
Here is what I know:
At 4:26am, I began screaming. It was a blood-curdling, guttural, visceral yelling that I don't think I've ever produced before in my life. Phil was scrambling to turn on the light and kept asking, "WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?!" Amos was crying at his highest decibel level possible. I remained in bed, staring at the wall.
Phil got up and soothed Amos. I remained in bed, frozen. He finally was able to coax me into speaking. This is what I told him.
All that I know is that in one moment I was in a deep, deep sleep. The next moment, I was awake. I looked over at the wall next to my side of the bed, the side where Amos sleeps in his Moses basket within arms reach of me. Between the closet and the painting on the wall, a bright figure of a woman was standing over Amos.
I could see her entire body clothed in a dress that resembled something out of "Little House on the Prairie." She wore a bonnet. The underdress (the best way I can describe it) was white. The frock over it was light blue with straps over her shoulders. Our walls, by the way, are green. I could tell that whatever she was wearing was distinctly not modern. I would put her dress to be somewhere in the 1800s. She was tall, pretty, and had straight, blonde hair. I estimate her age to be somewhere in her 20s to early 30s. She looked a bit like this, but with a bonnet.
She was gazing down at Amos in his basket.
As soon as I saw this apparition, I began screaming. She quickly turned to look at me and was quite alarmed (as were the rest of the occupants of the house). The look on her face was as if she had been startled. She stared directly at me, then disappeared.
All of this took about 5 to 10 seconds, at most, from the moment I woke up to when she disappeared. I'm still freaked out about it.
I have seen other things in my house, many in the same spot where this woman was standing. I have a theory that the way our house is built with a corridor of windows and doors all in a row is somehow allowing these spirits (or whatever they are) to show up. I don't think that our house is haunted. Rather, I think that this corridor of openings is somehow inviting random spirits to go through it. It sounds crazy, I know, but it's the best I can come up with. Where that woman stood is in this pathway of doors and windows. It also happens to be where Amos sleeps.
We thought we had solved the problem by blocking the windows and doors with window treatments and curtains. It seemed to be working, until last week. You may remember that Phil was complaining about our plumbing and that he had to knock holes into an old lathe and plaster wall in order to access the pipes. Our house was built in 1902. Some paranormal experts contend that home remodeling can cause disturbances. No kidding, brother.
I have the feeling that a combination of remodeling (or remuddling) along with the emotional tension in our house somehow encouraged or allowed this person into my home. I've also been praying a lot lately, prior to and after this incident. I'm grasping at whatever explanations I can come up with, because anything else makes me feel like I am losing my mind. Even though I have seen many apparitions in the past in different places and in my home, this one really freaked me out.
I think that I reacted the way that a mother would react when her child is in danger. Even though I didn't feel any malevolence from this woman, she triggered my primal instincts. Instincts of fear and of protection. After I told Phil what had happened, I said out loud in the room, "Leave this house. This is MY child. MY baby. He is NOT yours. It is time for you to go."
I have no idea if that worked or not. I also have no idea whether I am sane anymore. I know what I saw, but no one else saw her. I know that I completely freaked out my husband, my son, and my cat. I feel very bad about the way that I disturbed them.
By the way, after that, the bedroom was warm again. Our temperature control panel is in the living room, which is not near the bedroom. If I am to believe that temperatures can drop in a room where a spirit is present, then that is why my bedroom was so cold. It is also why only one room would be cold, thus it did not trigger the furnace to come on.
So, make of it what you will. This is just one of many stories I have to tell in this realm. It is, however, the one that really knocked me to my core.

Get spooky in your own time and space, lady

42 beautiful people muttered something back:
I think you are onto something with the corridor theory. I personally have problems sleeping with closet doors open or window curtains open. It goes to a basic instinct I've had, and I follow what my instinct says and keep them closed. I don't let the kids leave their closet doors open either.
Yes, there's nothing like raw terror to shake things up in the middle of the night. I don't know what happened, but it was darn scary for the whole family. I'm not in any way creeped out that I'll be home alone next week. Nope, not at all. Not even a little bit.
I believe that you saw what you saw, and I understand your instict to protect Amos. My understanding is that most spirits, apparitions, presences, or whatever you call them, are not harmful. You also didn't think she was malevolent. I think she just thought Amos was, indeed, the cutest baby ever, and she was just admiring him.
Sorry you were so startled, though, I'm sure that was upsetting.
This is why I'm glad that we're buying a new house. No spooks for us, I hope!
Unless Casper showed up at my bedside, I don't think I'd see an apparition that wouldn't scare me silly.
I'm sorry you were so frightened, but I'm glad that the lady was not malevolent.
wow, scary stuff :( I'm lucky I've never experienced anything like that before. It sounds like she was maybe just watching a peaceful baby sleeping. Maybe reminded of her own? At least she wasn't there sith any ill-intent it seems.
I believe you, sometimes things just can't be 'explained' away by anything else.
In my experience, remodeling chased my ghosts away. I gutted a bedroom to make my kitchen larger. They haven't been back since. As they layers of wall came off, I learned it was obviously a child's bedroom at one time.
The spirits of children that would run in my back door and out my font door annoyed me so much because they would let the screen doors slam. This was in the winter time when I take my wood screen doors off so there was none to slam.
I never saw any though except for catching a shadow out of the corner of my eye. I would probably freak if I actually saw one.
I'm with "e" on the fact that she was probably not malevolent and was just admiring Amos. I can understand you being startled, though. Apparations appearing that clear are rare, but they do happen.
I, personally, am all for the construction idea. I am a 'sensitive', but I very rarely actually SEE the ghosts that I sense (must leave that up to the 'seer's)...One of the only times I've been able to "see" (and hear) the ghosts that I felt (yes, plural) was at a very familiar location to me...that was under some HEAVY construction.
Also heightened emotional states give the spirits energy to feed off of...so it probably helped this woman to appear so clearly as well.
Usually telling the spirits to leave works. If it doesn't...and if you REALLY want to stop this type of occurrence again, email me. I felt a very negative entity near my house approximately a year ago. A simple step managed to keep it out and away (but it also traps whatever is in in...so you need to 'cleanse' the house first).
ANYWAY. Point being...if you want some tips on cleaning, then protecting your house...email me. If the spirits are welcome, then we can work on protecting your bedroom from the spirits. :D
Either way, way cool experience (once you get behind the freak-me-out aspect of it)...and I totally believe you.
Wow! What a way to wake up. It is an amazing story, and I believe every word. Weird things happen in old houses. My mom's old house was built in 1901 and I had friends that had known the previous owners. My friends refused to go into the house, believing it was haunted. I never got the whole story, but when multiple people tell you the same thing....it's convincing.
You reacted the way any woman would. I think it's cool that you told her calmly to leave your house. I hope it works for you.
Wow, that's amazing! Sounds like she wasn't trying to cause any harm at least - she just wanted to admire the baby.
Wonder what was there before your house was built - if there was another house on that spot or nearby? She could have been a former resident of the area.
I believe in ghosts, so I totally believe you saw her. I probably would have reacted much the same way.
(If your house has these regular occurrences, you should be calling in the Ghost Hunters! I was more of a skeptic until I started watching that show.)
Oi, that is freaky!! I believe you though.
I have no idea why things show up when they do. I think anyone who has experienced things like this either talks them self out of it, or keeps it to them self for fear of being told it was a dream or something else.
Upon waking and seeing a figure - your reaction was primal - you yelled at a stranger to get away from your child.
I would not worry about her though, even if she chooses to stick around. From your description of events - that she was fully realized not a spector and that she was gazing at Amos - sounds more like wonderment to me. Like someone who would protective of him, not harmful.
It also sounds like she did not expect you to be able to see her even if you could sense her so the shock was a two way street.
After my brother died, I had a printers drawer on the wall and I had two rings of his in it. When I was sitting in my room - they would come flying out of the box. I would pick them up, put them back and they would go sailing across the room again. I never saw who was flinging them - but after about the 5th time, I finally said - okay - I get it - your here - I acknowledge that - now either move the rings to the place in the drawer you want them or knock it off because I am tired of this shit. They stopped moving.
We had a lot of activity at that house - it was built in 1861 and was a weight station in the underground railroad. That cats flat out refused to go to the basement for first few years we lived there. I have always taken things as common place - part of the world that we lose as we grow up and are told things don't exist.
I have missed out and will have to catch up on your blog to find out what all is going on - but don't don't let this wear on you.
OMG. That is crazy. What a horrible experience. There are so many things I can't explain and this would be at the top of the list for today! Sending warm hugs.
Hugs, honey. Maybe do some research on the house?
Just to put a name to the face?
I'm not being flip - I do believe 'There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio' than we know.
Hopefully next time a ghost visit you it will be one who was a plumber and they will be able to sort out your pluming and maybe fix your heating.
I believe, and I am utterly fascinated. I also watch entirely too much Ghost Whisperer.
I have had my own close encounters of the "spirit" kind and have never seen a malevolent one.
Have a safe trip.
@ Phil: One of my ghosts appeared in broad daylight.
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG!
Okay, that is FAR WORSE than what has happened in our house so far in the 6 days we've lived in spookville :(
Just reading this has me scared out of my mind. Especially since we're having "activity" here too. If this happens, we're shakin' it up at the Holiday Inn!!!
Before a child enters the Earth realm and is incarnated into this lifetime they were "in spirit" on the Other Side waiting to be born. This means that they may have been there with passed over loved ones before they came here.
It is not unusual for these loved ones to step in from the Other Side and visit with these wee ones. And often their guardian angels will interact with them as well.
Who ya gonna call?
We had a problem at our old house, I never saw anyone but I could feel their presence as did all the animals. The feeling came from the closet in Nicholas' room and it totally freaked me out, we think it was a child because we could hear it playing with his toys over the monitor. We went into his room one day and said "We don't care that you are here just don't hurt our baby." From that point on we always left the closet open and we never had any problems but I must say I was glad to be out of that house, that stuff freaks me out.
We've had our 'visitors', but if presented with what you'd been, I would be screaming, too.
Phil, perhaps you'll be sleeping on the sofa while they're gone?
I agree with others, most spirits are harmless. We've had a small child run up to the foot of our bed (when Gameboy was only months old), other than that, we've been visited by relatives. (the little spirit made the room cold-family, not so much)
I hope you get a better night's sleep tonight. Safe travels tomorrow. I'll be thinking good thoughts for you...
telling ghosts etc in a strong voice is supposed to scare them away .. hopefully it worked!!
did she have whitened teeth like in the picture !!! >> (scary )
that sounds creepy!! hope she wont return again, get a pastor to bless ur house if possible
You've got to watch Ghost Hunters on Sci Fi It's always full of good haunting information.
Hi--found you through Sandy's blog. I had to comment, because your experience was very similiar to my "nonbelieving" sister in law, who is as rational as the day is long. Four years ago, they moved into a home and began remodeling it. She woke to find a man standing in her room looking out the curtains at one point. He was dressed in clothes from the 1920s. She screamed. He looked at her, startled, and disappeared. She and her husband hear music playing up in their attack sometimes too--from that time period. And once, after hearing a crash, she came downstairs to find her coffee table pushed across the room as well. I never though much about "ghosties" until I watched her go through these experiences. She was told, like so many are, that these "spirits" are not usually harmful...and they haven't been. Just creepy...
*attic* not attack (see what all of this ghost thinking is doing to me?) Sorry!
Whoa. Scary, but fascinating. I'd feel the same way if someone was standing over Cora in my own bedroom. Marc did some research at the library when we first moved into our place and found some info that our neighborhood used to be a cemetary a looong, looong time ago. I wonder if that's some of the reason for your visitors, along with your very plausible corridor theory? Phil, come on over anytime while Sarah's out of town - we'd love for you to join us for dinner. Plus, we have a comfy guest room that so far, hasn't had any visitors. :)
Ack! My son and I live in our apartment by ourselves and I am already freaked out about things that go bump in the night (other than the upstairs neighbors of course) and this will be something that keeps me up tonight!
It doesn't sound like she meant any ill-will, but it's still freaky to find someone in your room next to your baby that doesn't belong there!
I can only imagine I would react in the same way, though it's possible I would have been completely frozen until she disappeared.
If you ever watch Ghost Hunters, they do say that in most cases, spirits mean no harm. But geez, it would freak me out, too.
My mother tells a lot of stories about things she has seen, and says she's sensitive. I sort of wish I had inherited that. Or maybe not.
Oh, and I read this whole thing with my hand over my mouth. If I could read with my hand over my eyes, I would have.
*chills*
Wow.
I hope your trip down here is better than you think. I'll be thinking about you.
How old is your house? And do you think the emotional week you were having beforehand was connected to seeing the woman?
O.K.! Sandy is right! This is way creepier!
I'm not *even* referring you to the susiej ghost story. whew.
Holy crap. I totally have chills right now - they started when you wrote "the bedroom was very cold." I hope the spirits will leave you alone. God speed, my name sharer...
Oh my GOstbusters . . . found you at Sandy's! OK, so like so many others, I had a similar experience. FREAKED ME OUT and still does today whenever I think about it.
My mom used a Ouija board when I was about 7. After she and her friends had a drunken night of fun with the thing strange things started happening. We had visits from our pastor, a psychic, and finally another Ouija board session to ask the "spirits" to leave. Well, they didn't. Not until one night after seeing what she believed to be a MAN standing at the foot of her bed, Monster Mommy demanded that he leave in the same manner that you demanded your spirit back off! After that, no more chills, no more moving curtains, knocks in the night, "voices," or other weirdness occurred. Oh, geez, I'm freaking myself out . . .
I ventured over here from Sandy at Momisodes and I totally believe your story even though I do not believe in ghosts. I can only imagine how it made you feel with your son being involved (*chills down my spine*).
That was interesting yet creepy all in one. Wow. I'd be totally creeped out too. I think you reacted how any mother would have reacted.
Our good friends moved into their step-fathers after he passed away and before their daughter was born. She spends a lot of time saying "birdy" and at the most random times. Usually at night she'll sit up in bed and say "birdy." They finally figured out she was talking to Burt (Burty) whom she never met in person. Crazy. I do think you must be in some sort of path way.
Awww.. you are so brave, if I were you, I can't go to the same room anymore.. I'm a big wuss
I'm with Ecky . . . I'd move my (and Amos') bed to a whole other room. Big. Chicken.
I imagine that if I saw that I'd freak too. Totally understandable.
There are so many things in this world beyond our understanding. Is it creepy of me to be a little jealous that you have been able to witness this?
Maybe she was just stopping by to admire the adorable sleeping baby. Let's just go with that!
i can not even tell you about the chill that just passed through me, as i read this story!!
wow.
holy crap.
